Philosophy and Objective of the Faculty

The Philosophy of the Faculty of Education is to strengthen the teaching profession in Ghana by offering students a solid formation in subject content knowledge as well as pedagogical skills in principles of teaching, learning, assessing and evaluating students required to be a competent teacher. Consequently, the academic programmes offered in the Faculty have the following four-fold objectives:
  • To provide students with value-based courses and seeks to nourish a love of learning and a commitment to excellence which students will in turn pass on to those they will teach and encounter in later life;
  • To provide an opportunity for practicing teachers to upgrade their skills and qualifications;
  • To support the basic principles of teaching/learning process and to promote the skills required to engaging students in the active participation in study and learning;
  • To train students in the Arts, Sciences and Social Sciences and prepare them for higher academic pursuits as professional teachers in the Senior High Schools and other professional areas
Programmes of the Faculty

The Faculty of Education runs three (3) tracks of programmes:

Track 1: The Bachelor of Education programmes: It has the following six (6) different programmes
  • Bachelor of Education in English (B.Ed. English)
  • Bachelor of Education in Mathematics (B.Ed. Mathematics)
  • Bachelor of Education in Computer Science (B.Ed. Computer Science)
  • Bachelor of Education in Accounting (B.Ed. Accounting)
  • Bachelor of Education in Geography (B.Ed. Geography)
  • Bachelor of Education in Religious Studies (B.Ed. Religious Studies)

 

Track 2:Diploma in Basic Education for Non-Degree Holders :
The over-all aim of this programme is to prepare Senior High School graduates, DBS and HND holders to be professional teachers in the basic schools at the undergraduate level. The goal is to produce broad-based and competent teaching professionals who will be able to function competently in the basic schools to handle both class and subject teaching at the primary and the Junior Highs schools as well exposing these teachers to classroom practices

 

Track 3: The One-Year Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) for Degree Holders
This is a professional programme designed for degree holders (B.A, B.Sc. M.A M.Phil etc.) who already have adequate subject matter knowledge in a specific area of discipline such as Science, English, Mathematics, Social Studies, etc. from a recognized University, but with no background in Education, and are already teaching as ‘pupil teachers’ (unprofessional teachers) in the Senior High Schools (or want to teach in the Senior High School as professional teachers). This programme exposes them to general Education and specifically to methods and skills of teaching, learning, assessing and evaluating students in their specific fields of expertise. Successful completion of this programme entitles them to a certificate which qualifies them as professional teachers in the Senior High Schools by the Ghana Education Service
