Division of Human Resource Holds Workshop for UEW Drivers
The Division of Human Resource (UEW) in collaboration with the Transport Section of the University on Wednesday, 20th and Thursday, 21st June, 2018 held a two-day workshop for all drivers of the University at Pecku Conference Room, North Campus, Winneba.
The event which was organised as part of the Division’s in-service training for staff of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) sought to equip drivers of UEW with the requisite knowledge and also help them improve on their attitude towards work.
In her Welcome Address, the Deputy Registrar, Division of Human Resource, Mrs Deborah Afful said the workshop was essential as drivers constitute a very significant aspect of the University since they are individuals who carry the lives of people they work with.
She showed her appreciation to all who graced the training and encouraged all drivers to take advantage of the opportunity given them to empower themselves with knowledge that would help them in order not to flout the rules governing the use of University vehicles. She added “in humility draw the attention of fellow drivers and call each other to order and remind ourselves of the things we have forgotten”.
Presenting on Driver Management Relationship, Madam Rosaline Ahensah of the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Authority (DVLA) – Winneba Branch said for a driver to establish good driver-employer relationship he or she needs to be respectful, trustworthy, develop good communication skills and keep manager-driver private issues confidential.
In his contribution, Mr Prince Adjei Nyakoh also a representative from DVLA advised the participants to adopt an informal traditional approach in knowing the kind of people they work with. He urged them to have certain tools and equipment such as log books and tracking devices amongst others that would help in the daily routine check on their cars. “The appropriate clothing for all occasions must be part of good practices for every professional driver” He noted.
Presenting on the topic “Functional English”, lecturer, Department of English Education, Mrs Michelle Debrah educated drivers on the use of Basic English which entailed words, titles and sentences that would help them convey the right messages to their superiors.
She said, “manners makes a man and it is therefore important for drivers to use words such as please, sorry and thank you as a means of showing respect in their line of work”.
The Faculty Officer for Educational Studies, Mr Robert Tetteh Mensah, presented on “UEW Professional Ethics for Drivers”. In his presentation he disclosed that teamwork, integrity, confidentiality and punctuality were the basic ethics that would help drivers in the daily discharge of their duties.
Finally, Dr. Beth Offei Awuku of the University Health Service who presented on “Time and Stress Management” mentioned that time is such that when lost could not be regained and therefore important for drivers to take certain precautions when it comes to their mental and physical health.
She further gave some suggestions on how drivers could manage stress through time management, intentional relaxation, social and spiritual activities.
In his Closing Remarks, the Registrar, Surv. Paul Osei Barima Esq encouraged UEW drivers to report to the appropriate authorities when necessary and not overstress themselves.
