2018 Admission into PhD and MSc Programmes in Water and Environment

Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana.
The Regional Water and Environmental Sanitation Centre Kumasi (RWESCK) is one of twenty-two Centres funded by the World Bank under the Africa Centres of Excellence project. The core mandate of the Centre is to strengthen the human resource capacity in Ghana and the sub-region in areas related to water and environment to meet the human resource gap required to address development challenges highlighted in the Africa Water Vision for 2025 and the Sustainable Development Goals.

PhD PROGRAMME FELLOWSHIPS

The Centre through the School of Graduate Studies, KNUST is pleased to announce that partial funding (Tuition and research grants) are available to pursue 3 year full time study in the following specialisations:

  • PhD in Water Resources Management
  • PhD in Water Supply and Treatment Technologies
  • PhD in Environmental Sanitation and Waste Management.

DETAILS OF PhD PARTIAL SCHOLARSHIP PACKAGE

  • Tuition and bench fees
  • Monthly stipend for a maximum of 24 months after successful completion of year one and meeting all academic requirements which include but not limited to passing all courses and comprehensive examination and successfully defending research proposal
  • Research and travel grant for field work

ENTRY REQUIREMENT

In conformity with the entry requirements of the School of Graduate Studies, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, the successful candidate must have a minimum of:

  • First or Second Class (Upper Division) in first degree
  • Good Master’s degree in Water and Sanitation, Environmental Engineering, Agricultural Engineering (Soil and Water Engineering option), Civil Engineering (Water Resources/Hydrology option), Geomatic Engineering, Natural Resources, Mathematics, Geography, Chemical Engineering and other relevant disciplines, with an average of at least 60%. Submit academic transcripts.
  • Candidates from non-Anglophone countries must have an internationally recognised Certificate of Proficiency in the English Language (TOEFL or British Council, IELTS) with above average score or be available to attend a three (3) months English language course at KNUST.
  • Age Limit: 40 years or less.
  • Candidates with one publication in a journal as first author have an advantage.
  • Evidence of current and previous employment.

MASTERS PROGRAMME (MSC/MPHIL) FELLOWSHIPS

RWESCK Graduate Programme is pleased to announce that limited partially-funded (partial tuition and research grants) scholarships are available for applicants from Ghana and West African Countries to pursue 18 months full-time MSc programme or 24 months MPhil in the following specialisations:

  • MSc/MPhil in Water Resources Engineering and Management
  • MSc/MPhil in Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation

  • Monthly stipend for a maximum of 12 months after successful completion of year one and meeting all academic requirements which include but not limited to passing all courses and successfully defending research proposal
  • Research and travel grant for field work

COMPLETION OF APPLICATION FORM

KNUST will shortlist candidates for a selection interview in Kumasi OR via telephone or Skype. The date of the interview will be communicated after the short listing.

APPLICATION SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS

  • Completed application form with Two passport size photograph
  • Detailed CV and two letters of reference (one from a supervisor at the Master’s level)
  • Official transcripts and certificates for BSc and MSc degrees
  • Proof of ability to communicate in English for Candidates from non-Anglophone countries
  • Motivation letter (two pages). PhD and MPhil candidates are to submit soft and hard copies of a letter of motivation (max. two pages) with the heading outlining why you want to study, what makes you well-suited to study in your chosen specialisation, current occupation, how the Programme will fit into your professional vision, how your home country stands to benefit after your training.
  • Short concept note (three pages). PhD and MPhil candidates are to submit both soft and hard copies of a short concept note (max. 3 pages) outlining the justification, objectives, methodology and expected outcomes of a research idea.
