KNUST 2018 Career Fair
The College of Engineering (CoE) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has organized its 2018 Career Fair for students of the College on the theme: “Engineering Excellence for Accelerated National Development” at the Kumapley Auditorium. The three-day fair provided a forum for key engineering companies across the country to present their companies to students and also to commence the process of recruiting top class students directly from the College.
Professor E. K. Forkuo, Dean of the Faculty of Civil and Geo-Engineering, welcomed all and stated that, the last Friday of the month of February every year has been designated for the fair. He mentioned that, 23 organizations would participate in the 2018 fair which would provide an excellent opportunity for the graduating students to come face to face with the participating engineering companies so as to discover opportunities available in their chosen fields of study. He advised students to make use of the opportunity presented by the fair to educate themselves.
Representatives of the participating companies took turns to present their companies to the students. Miss Lena Ampadu, a representative from the National Communications Authority (NCA) mentioned that, NCA is established by an Act of Parliament and that their main aim is providing universal access to communication. She added that, facilitating innovative reliable and sustainable communication is their vision as an establishment. Some of their functions, she continued, are granting licenses and authorizations and educating and protecting consumers.
Miss Ampadu later explained the services they regulate with the media and mobile network operators. She also disclosed that, there are many job opportunities not only for engineering students but for students from other colleges. She then stressed that, for someone to be employed, the person must possess qualities like being innovative, resourceful, good communication skills, have good leadership and managerial skills, among others.
Mr. Kwaku Asuman Quansah, a representative from Huawei Technology, said that Huawei is ranked 83rd on the Global Fortune 500 based on its revenue in 2017 in the provision of ICT solutions. He stated that, the total number of employees in Ghana is over 800 with 660 as technical engineers for on-site support service and project implementation. Mr. Quansah mentioned that, four ICT laboratories have been donated to KNUST, UCC and UDS as a sign of commitment to the development of Ghana.
Mr. Nii Adotey Mingle, of MTN, Kumasi noted that many students were having their internships with the company across the country but they are looking forward to granting appointments to over 380 students this year.
All the participating companies used the opportunity to make presentations to the students and educated them on what is expected of graduates in terms of qualification, skills and personal strengths.
