KNUST 5.6 Million Euro Laboratory Equipment Inaugurated

The Management of the University together with Professor Mark Adom Asamoah, Provost of the College of Engineering (CoE) have inaugurated new laboratory equipment worth 5.6 million Euros at the CoE as part of efforts aimed at retooling four laboratories in the College.
In his speech, Professor Adom Asamoah stated that recognising the significant role laboratories play in developing the needed man-power for industry, the College has also committed 1,300,000 cedis to renovate the laboratories. He indicated that the equipment being inaugurated cater for 25% of the College’s needs and covers five thematic laboratories namely: Applied Mechanics Laboratory, Soil Laboratory, Aerodynamics and Fluid Laboratory, Soil Laboratory and the Structure and Strength of Materials Library.
He also acknowledged the contribution of the Electricity Company of Ghana, Volta River Authority and the Ghana Grid Company Limited for their support of 450,000 cedis to re-roof the laboratories. According to the Provost, these investments add to an earlier one by the World Bank for the Petroleum and Chemical engineering laboratories worth $13.6.
He added that the College has the mandate to churn out high calibre graduates and has a vision of becoming one of the top ten Engineering Universities in Africa by 2025. Recognising that the quality of graduates’ hinges on quality of teaching and the practical hands-on training students receive, he called on the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders to cover the remaining five thematic laboratories.

Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso, Vice-Chancellor, stated that KNUST is a foremost institution in the training of engineers for the country and has the best lecturers, students, laboratories, equipment to position the College as one of the best in the world.
Professor Obiri-Danso continued that new programmes are being added to include all disciplines of engineering to increase enrolment to help meet the University’s target of 50,000 students by 2025.He used the occasion to commend technicians and lecturers, past and present for making the College one of the best in Africa.
Reverend Fr. Dr. Peter Addai Mensah dedicated the equipment. Some of the new equipment are Universal Tester, Triasial Shear Testing, Fuel Cell, Pendulum Impact Tester, Armfield, Heat Exchanger, Pump Test Rig and RBM 25/20
Others are ForceTurn 800 50, Torsional Vibrating Equipment, Strain Guage Trainer and Tree Pinned Arch.
