BREAKING: Massive Fire Erupts Under M1 Highway in Johannesburg

A massive fire erupts under M1 highway in Johannesburg , causing chaos for commuters and prompting emergency services to contain the blaze and ensure the safety of residents. Johannesburg EMS is responding to the underground cable fire reported in the early hours of Wednesday May 1st near the north double-decker section of the M1. No injuries have been reported.

EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi stated that the cables provide electricity to Braamfontein and its surrounding areas.

“Our colleagues from City Power are here to make sure they can open the tunnels as we extinguish the fire.”

Mulaudzi reported that the fire has primarily affected parts of the highway, specifically Smit Street.

“We are extinguishing the fire towards the west. We encourage motorists to exercise caution while driving in that area.

“So far the area between Empire and Crown interchange has been closed. We urge motorists to avoid that area as we are still extinguishing the fire.”

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department is investigating a fire that caused a highway closure in central Joburg, with the hotspot at railway tracks under the M1. Traffic is being diverted at Carr Street and Parktown intersections.
