Mkwawa University College of Education Admission 2020 – 2021

MUCE offers various undergraduate education programmes leading to the award of various degrees in education. A total of four undergraduate degree programmes are offered at various academic units, these are: Bachelor of Education in Arts (B.Ed. Arts), Bachelor of Education in Science (B.Ed. Science), Bachelor of Arts with Education (B.A. Education) and Bachelor of Science with Education (B.Sc. Education). 

Any interested person who has requisite entry qualifications can apply.

Applicants with direct qualifications i.e. those who have completed Advanced level of secondary education (Form VI), will have to apply through the Central Admission System as advertised by the TCU. Equivalent applicants with diplomas in Education, NTA level 6 and non-NTA level 6 recognized by TCU will also apply through CAS. Other equivalent applicants apart from those listed above (such as post-form VI certificates, bachelor degree holders) will continue lodging their applications with the University of Dar es Salaam.

Application forms for applicants with other equivalent qualifications can be obtained from the Directorate of Undergraduate Studies, Administration Block in Room 105, or they will be sent directly to the applicant upon request, but only where the applicant meets the required admission qualifications. Application forms can also be obtained from the offices of Regional Education Officers (REOs) or downloaded from the University website at www.udsm.ac.tz. The duly filled forms must reach the Director of Undergraduate Studies not later than the date indicated on the advertisement calling for applications for the particular admission season. Only applicants who meet the required minimum entry qualifications into the University should submit application forms. Forms from applicants who do not meet the minimum entry qualifications will not be processed and the admission fee if paid will be forfeited.

2. It is an offence to submit false information when applying for admission. Applicants who will be discovered to have submitted forged certificates or any other false information will not be considered and appropriate legal action will be taken against them. Bonafide University students are cautioned not to attempt applying for admission. If such students submit their application they will be liable to re- registration. Likewise, former students who have already graduated cannot be admitted as undergraduate students under Government loan sponsorship.

3. All new students are required to report for the orientation program that normally takes place during the week preceding the beginning of the new academic year. 

4. Successful applicants will be registered only after they have paid the requisite University fees.

5. Fees paid will not be refunded.

6. All students, if accepted, are expected to conform entirely to University regulations.

7. The deadline for registration of first year students will be two weeks, from the first day of the orientation week, while for continuing students it will be the Friday of the second week after the beginning of the first semester.

8. Except in exceptional circumstances, no student will be allowed to change subjects/courses later than the Friday of the fourth week after the beginning of the first semester.

9. (a) Transferring from one academic program to another will be allowed only where the student has the required admission criteria for the academic program for which transfer is being sought and a vacancy exists in that program.
(b) Students discontinued on academic grounds from one College/School may be allowed to apply into another College/School provided that the sponsor approves.
 (c) Discontinued students wishing to re-apply in the same College/School must show evidence of having followed further studies satisfactory to the College/School.

10. (a) Students entering this University as transfer cases cannot transfer grades obtained elsewhere. They can, however, be exempted from taking corresponding courses.
(b) Where degrees are classified, the maximum transferable load is one academic year.

11. Students will be allowed to be away from University studies for a maximum of two years if they are to be allowed to be re-admitted to the same year of studies where they left off.

12. Students discontinued from studies because of examination irregularities will be considered for re- admission after they have been away for three years. They will be required to re-apply and compete with other applicants for re- admission into first year.

13. No change of names by students will be entertained during the course of study at the University and they will only be allowed to use names appearing on their certificates.

14. No student will be allowed to postpone studies after effective commencement of an academic year except under special circumstances. Permission to postpone studies will be considered after producing satisfactory evidence of the reasons for postponement and written approval from the sponsor. Special circumstances shall
include: (a) Sickness; (b) Serious social problems (each case to be considered on its own merit); and (c) Severe sponsorship problem.

Mkwawa University College of Education Entry Requirements

1. General Minimum Entry Requirements
A candidate shall be deemed eligible for consideration for admission into a first-degree programme of the MUCE if he/she has one of the following qualifications:
(a) Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (C.S.E.E.) or equivalent, with passes in FIVE approved subjects THREE of which must be at credit level, obtained prior to sitting for the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examinations (A.C.S.E.E.) or equivalent.
AND
(b) (i) For all Applicants except graduates of 2014 and 2015:
Two Principal Level Passes in appropriate subjects in the A.C.S.E.E. or equivalent with total points from three subjects not below 5 for Arts programmes and 4 for Science-based programmes based on the following grade to point conversion scale:
A = 5; B = 4; C = 3; D = 2; E = 1; S = 0.5 and F = 0 point
The minimum Principal in this case is an ‘E’ grade.
(ii) For graduates of 2014 and 2015:
Two Principal Level Passes in appropriate subjects in the A.C.S.E.E. or equivalent with total points from three subjects not below 5 (for Arts programmes) and 4 (for Science-based programmes) based on the following grade to point conversion scale:
A = 5; B+ = 4; B = 3; C = 2; D = 1; E = 0.5 and F = 0 point.
The Minimum Principal in this case is a ‘C’ grade
[Note: Principal Level Passes in Divinity/Islamic Knowledge are not counted]
OR
(c) An appropriate equivalent Diploma with a GPA not less than 3.0 for Ordinary Diplomas or B average for Teacher Education and Health Related diplomas or Distinction for unclassified awards or C grade for Full Technician Certificates or Upper Second Class for non-NTA diplomas obtained from a college which is fully registered by NACTE and approved by the UDSM Senate.


Note:
1. Applicants from countries which follow the 8-4-4 education system need to complete at least one year of study at a university in their own countries before they can be considered for admission into the University of Dar es Salaam.

2. All Direct applicants must also satisfy the TCU minimum requirement of Two Principal passes with at least a total of 4.0 points from Two Subjects.
1.1 Additional Entry Requirements
In addition to the general minimum entrance requirements, there are additional qualifications, specific to the various degree programmes, as shown in the UDSM/MUCE prospectus.
1.2 Bachelor of Education in Arts ( B.Ed. Arts)
This is a three-year degree programme tailored to cover a wide range of educational courses and minor subject content components selected from Arts subjects. It aims at creating graduates who have a good understanding of educational issues in the country, region and the world in general. The degree programme requires students to take many educational courses and one teaching subject from Arts subjects depending on their education background and performance. Students admitted in this degree programme should have a background in Arts subjects in their advanced secondary school education or equivalent education qualifications. The programme focuses on preparing educational managers and teacher educators who can teach in teacher education colleges and save as educational experts in Arts related areas of education management, administration and research. This programme prepares specifically school managers, planners, administrators, inspectors, curriculum developers and educational officers in various levels of education institutions.
1.3 Bachelor of Education in Science ( B.Ed. Sc.)
This is a three-year degree programme tailored to cover a wide range of educational courses and minor subject content components selected from science subjects. It aims at preparing graduates who have a good understanding of educational issues in the country, region and the world at large. The degree programme requires students to take educational courses and one teaching subject from science subjects depending on their education background and performance. Students admitted in this degree programme should have a background in science subjects in their advanced secondary school education or equivalent education qualifications. This programme focuses on preparing educational managers and teacher educators who can teach in teacher education colleges and save as educational experts in science related areas of education management, administration and research. This programme prepares specifically school managers, planners, administrators, inspectors, curriculum developers and educational officers in various levels of education institutions.
1.4 Bachelor of Science with Education (B.Sc. Ed.)
This is a three-year degree programme that offers courses leading to an award of Bachelor of Science with Education degree (B.Sc. (Ed.). The overall objective of the programme is that over the three years, a student should develop sufficient mastery of subject matter and competence in two teaching subjects as well as in pedagogy. Students admitted into B.Sc. (Ed.) programme shall select two major Science subjects from either of the following combinations:
Biology and Chemistry; Biology and Geography; Computer Science and Physics; Computer Science and Mathematics; Mathematics and Chemistry; Physics and Biology; Physics and Chemistry; Physics and Geography; Physics and Mathematics; Chemistry and Geography; Mathematics and Geography.
Basically, a B.Sc. (Ed.) graduate is a professional teacher who can teach at Ordinary and Advanced Secondary School levels and hence very marketable in the education sector, both public and private. Further, the teaching profession is a fountain of human resource worldwide due to the ability of professionals to enterceptively adapt and transform into any profession at minimum cost and time. The following is a list of some of possible employers for B.Sc. (Ed.) graduates:
1. Teaching for both public and private sectors.
2. Research institutions – National and International related, but not limited to the following sectors: Agricultural and wildlife; Medical; Veterinary; Nutrition; Environment; Information and Communication Technology (ICT); and Tourism


1.5 Bachelor of Arts with Education (B.A. ED.)
This is a three-year degree programme that aims at preparing graduate teachers. The degree programme equips the graduates with skills and knowledge on various disciplines including Kiswahili, Geography, Economics, French, Linguistics, English Literature, History, and Political Science. Furthermore, graduates in B.A. (Education) programme are equipped with skills and knowledge on curriculum design and implementation, teaching methodologies, as well as skills in education management and administration. Students enrolled in B.A. Education programme are required to take two teaching subjects (content courses) and education courses. Therefore, the degree programme produces teachers specialising in any two of the following courses or subjects: Geography, History, Economics, Kiswahili, French, Political Science, Literature, and Linguistics.
Basically, the B.A. (Education) degree programme produces graduate teachers who can be employed in teaching institutions including schools and colleges. These graduate teachers can also work with government institutions and research institutions that deal with education matters.


2. APPLICATION FEE
Applicants will be required to pay a non-refundable application fee as follows: TZS 10,000/= for Tanzanian applicants and USD 50 for Non-Tanzanian applicants.


3. TUITION FEE
The standard University of Dar es Salaam fee structure for science programmes will apply for both Tanzanians and Non-Tanzanians:
(i) Tuition fee for B.ED. (Science) and B.Sc. Ed. programmes is TZS 1,300,000.00 for Tanzanians and USD 2,700.00 for Non-Tanzanians per annum.
(ii) Tuition fee for B.ED. (Arts) and B.A. Ed. programmes is TZS 1,000,000.00 for Tanzanians and USD for Non-Tanzanians per annum.
