Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology Available Courses Offered

The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) in Arusha is one in a network of Pan-African Institutions of Science and Technology located across Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). These institutions, which are the proud brainchild of the late Nelson Mandela, envision training and developing the next generation of African scientists and engineers with a view to impacting profoundly on the continent’s development through the application of Science, Engineering and Technology and Innovation (SETI).

The NM-AIST, which is accredited by the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) is being developed into a world class research intensive institution for postgraduate and post-docs studies and research in SETI. The training in SETI, however, incorporates appreciable doses of relevant business studies and humanities ingredients. Thus the training curricular also incorporate strong innovation and entrepreneurship features, and hence strong academia-industry relations are part of the NM-AIST’s development agenda.

Programmes and Area of Specialization

NM-AIST is currently offering Master’s and PhD degrees in eight science and engineering areas, namely: Life Sciences (LiSe), Bio-Engineering (BioE), Mathematical and Computer Science and Engineering (MCSE), Information and Communication Science and Engineering (ICSE), Materials Science and Engineering (MaSE), Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering (HWRE), Environmental Science and Engineering (EnSE), Sustainable Energy Science and Engineering (SESE) and Environmental Management Information System (EMIS). Also NM-AIST in collaboration with Ifakara Health Institute (IHI), offers a Master ofScience degree in Public Health Research (PHR). Business Studies and Humanities (BuSH) constitute common core courses which are compulsory for all students. The common core courses are designed to enable the students to develop attributes necessary for them to excel in academic andindustry management and leadership that befits today’s knowledge society.

Master’s Programmes

  1. Master’s by Thesis: The candidate must be a holder of a relevant good Bachelor’s degree with a GPA of at least 3.5/5.0 or the equivalent, from a recognized Institution.

  2. Master’s by Coursework and Dissertation: The candidate must be a holder of a relevant good Bachelor’s degree with a GPA of at least 3.0/5.0 or the equivalent, from a recognized Institution.

PhD Programmes

  1. PhD by Thesis: The candidate must possess a relevant good Bachelor’s degree with a GPA of at least 3.5/5.0 or the equivalent, and a relevant good Master’s degree of at least the equivalent of B+ from a recognized Institution.
  2. PhD by Coursework and Dissertation: The candidate must possess relevant good Bachelor’s degree with a GPA of at least 3.0/5.0 or equivalent, and a relevant good Master’s degree of at least the equivalent of B+ from recognized Institutions.

Candidates for whom English was not their study language at undergraduate level are required to prove their Englis proficiency using internationally accepted criteria, e.g., TOEFL.
