Njombe Institute of Health and Allied Sciences (NJIHAS) was established by United Republic of Tanzania Ministry of Health envisioned to become a pre-eminent research,consultancy and practically oriented health educational institution dedicated to promote traditional health values which underpin life-long learning and achievement The Institute was founded in 1975 being a training center for mother and child care workers, “Maternal and child health Aider (MCHA)” was formed comprising 36 students for the courses mentioned above. The course was run for two years. In 1994 it began to offer courses for community health nurse of grade B “public health nursing B” grew this course is offered for a period of two years .course of midwifery and nursing reintroduced in 2004 with course duration of three years in 2005, the institute developed and in year 2008 curriculum was changed to “Competence based education training (CBET) college continued with the course only until 2015 where courses of diploma nursing and midwifery (education through distance) and course providers of public health to certificate level were established. The institute was promoted its status in 2017 and started to train nursing and midwifery in diploma (pre service) also in the same year began to train physician assistants for two years as a result of these changes resulted in changing the name of the college of Nursing and Midwifery to the Institute Health Sciences and Allied sciences Njombe (NJIHAS)

Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery
Holders of Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE), with 4 passes in non-religious subjects including C – Chemistry and Biology, D – Physics/Engineering Sciences and English Language. Pass in Basic Mathematics is an added advantage. Duration of the programme is 3 years.
Programme Objectives
Enrol learners with desirable entry qualifications into the programme
Distribute adequate and appropriate resources for enabling the teaching and learning process
Create conducive environment for teaching and learning n schools, clinical and Community settings
Monitor teaching and learning processes in schools, clinical and community settings
Produce competent Nurses and Midwives who will provide quality health care in Tanzania
Diploma in Clinical Medicine
Applicant through Direct entry into an Ordinary Diploma Course in Clinical Medicine (Clinical Officer) must have a minimum of “D” pass in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. A pass in English and Mathematics is an added advantage..
Methods of Study
- The programmeenhances a wide range of study methods and approaches. They include lecture discussion, small group discussion, case studies, role plays, tutorials, assignments, practical training including demonstration, laboratory/ward attachment and study tours
