Examining the NSC Exam Grading System

The National Senior Certificate (NSC) is the highest secondary school qualification in South Africa. It is awarded to learners who successfully complete Grade 12 and pass the NSC examinations. The NSC exam grading system is based on a seven-level scale, with each level representing a different level of achievement.

Here are the seven levels of achievement and their corresponding percentage ranges:

  • Level 7: 80-100% (Outstanding achievement)
  • Level 6: 70-79% (Meritorious achievement)
  • Level 5: 60-69% (Substantial achievement)
  • Level 4: 50-59% (Moderate achievement)
  • Level 3: 40-49% (Adequate achievement)
  • Level 2: 30-39% (Elementary achievement)
  • Level 1: 0-29% (Not achieved)

Learners who achieve at least Level 3 in six subjects, including at least one language at home language level, are awarded the NSC. Learners who achieve at least Level 4 in four subjects, including at least one language at home language level, are awarded the NSC with a higher certificate.

The NSC exam grading system is designed to ensure that learners are assessed fairly and consistently. The system is also designed to be transparent and easy to understand.

Here are some of the key features of the NSC exam grading system:

  • Moderation: All marked scripts are moderated by independent moderators to ensure that marking is consistent and fair.
  • Standardization: Marked scripts are standardized to ensure that the same standards are applied across all examination centers.
  • Quality assurance: The quality of the marking process is monitored by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) to ensure that it is fair and consistent.

The NSC exam grading system is a fair and reliable system that ensures that learners are assessed accurately and consistently. The system is also transparent and easy to understand, which helps learners to understand their results.
