UEW Office of the Dean of Student Affairs Trains Newly Elected Student-Leaders for 2018/2019 Academic Year

A three (3) day workshop has been organized by the University of Education Winneba from Monday 4th June to Wednesday 6th June, 2018 for newly elected student-leaders from all the halls of the University. This was in accordance with Article 2, section 2.2 of the ‘Students’ Handbook on Rules and Regulation which provides for organization of orientation for newly elected executives of the Students’ Representative Council/Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana, Junior Common Room Committee, National Union of Ghana Students, Ghana National Association of Teachers On Campus and Associations at the end of the second semester when they are elected into office.

The orientation was to expose student-leaders to general administrative procedures in the University and to train student leaders in financial administration. The three day event took place at the Registrar’s Conference Room at the North Campus, Winneba.

The Registrar, Surv. Paul Osei-Barima, Esq. in his keynote address, mentioned that, the Orientation was to improve the quality of student governance and ultimately translate these qualities into providing efficient, effective and friendly student-support services in the University. He brought to light some problems students were currently facing in the various halls which needed attention.

He informed them that as leaders, they were to serve and not to be served by students. He advised them not to put their interests first, but to work diligently with the Management of their respective halls of residence and protect the interests of students. He stated that, no student-leader has any right to form his or her own association on campus and challenged them to bring to book, any Management member who failed to perform his or her duties. Again, he noted that, there will be regular meetings with only student-leaders in their respective halls without Management of the halls, to find out their problems and solutions to them.

There were various presentations by some facilitators on diverse issues such as ‘Responsibilities and Privileges of a Student-Leader’, ‘Making Efficient Use of Time as a Student-Leader’, ‘How to Organize a Conference/Week Celebration’, ‘Campus Security and Relationship and University Transport System amongst others.

A total of 54 student-leaders attended the orientation. Also present at the orientation were, Deputy Registrar, Academic Affairs, Mrs. Christie Okae-Anti, Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Samuel Yirenkyi, Vice Dean of Student Affairs, Mr. Ignatius Obeng, Prof. Yaw Ameyaw, Director of Quality Assurance and other invited guests.
