UEW to Collaborate with the University of the West of Scotland

Management of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) on Tuesday, 19th June, 2018 held a meeting at the Council Chamber, North Campus, Winneba with Dr. David L. Ndzi of the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) to discuss possible collaborations between the two institutions.

In his Introductory Remarks, the Ag. Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni said one of the things that were extremely characteristic and analytic of every University was to strive to become global and international.

“If a University becomes too comfortable in its own little state, that is the sure time of decline and beginning of decay of that University. So you will realise that all over the world, Universities are constantly seeking collaborations with likeminded institutions”.

“Therefore, this morning we are here to do what Universities must be doing, forging collaborations, looking for excuses, looking for windows and looking for possibilities of getting in touch with other people so that we can examine best practices and extend ourselves as we also visit other people.” The Ag. Vice-Chancellor said.

In his Purpose for the Visit, the Assistant Dean of International Programmes, UWS, Dr. David L. Ndzi asserted that one of the key things that he had been looking at was how Africans develop their sector and in different areas.

“The idea of the collaboration is really to enable staff and even students who want to pursue PhD to do so and continue with their duty, but it is not just about the qualification; the idea is that we want to build a network of research activities and build critical mass in different research areas to help us address issues that are pertinent to the country as well as the continent”.

“One thing that I was clear about is, it should not be one institution type scheme because we want to have a network of local supervisors such that if there is someone here who is doing PhD and there is no expert to guide them, they can be supervised by another member of staff from another University and vice-versa.” He said.

He therefore hinted that in developing that capacity they could then start to focus on applying for research grants.
