Overview Of UHAS and its Access Course Programs

In Ho, Ghana’s Volta Region, there is a public institution called the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS). One of Ghana’s newest public universities is UHAS. Its operations commenced in September 2012 with the admission of the first group of 154 students.

UHAS Access Course And Its Requirement

SCHOOL OF ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES ACCESS (SAHS)

The Access Course in the SCHOOL OF ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES is a Nine (9) week programme to enable interested applicants with Certificate in Medical Laboratory Technology (for Medical Laboratory Sciences); HND in Hospitality Management/ Food Science and Technology (for Dietetics) and Certificate in Orthotics or Physiotherapy Assistantship (for Physiotherapy) from accredited institutions to enroll into degree programmes (Sandwich). Applicants with FGPA of not less than 2.5 with a minimum of three (3) years certified working experience, will enter degree programmes in the School of Allied Health Sciences. 

The Access Course will be a blend of online and face-to-face mop-up teaching and learning starting from June  to July (i.e. 5weeks Online) and face-to-face teaching and learning starting from August 1, to August 30  at Ho Campus

Successful Candidates from the Access Course would be required to pass a selection interview and enroll at Level 200 of the Sandwich Programme in the following year. Programmes to be enrolled on successful completion of the access course and selection interview are:

  • Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences
  • Bachelor of Dietetics
  • Bachelor of Physiotherapy

The Deadline for submission of online Applications is May for Access applicants.

SCHOOL OF NURSING AND MIDWIFERY ACCESS COURSE (SONAM)

Access Course in the SCHOOL OF NURSING AND MIDWIFERY is a programme to enable auxiliary Nurses, Midwives and Community Health Nurses who already hold certificates and Auxiliary Identification Number (AIN) or Professional Identification Number (PIN) in Post-basic Midwifery from the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Ghana to enroll onto degree SANDWICH programmes in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. The point of entry will be Level 100 / 200 depending on applicant’s professional background and choice of programme. Applicants MUST pass the Access Course examination before they are considered for admission into the SANDWICH programme which has the following options:

  • Bachelor of Nursing
  • Bachelor of Midwifery
  • Bachelor of Public Health Nursing

The Access Course in the School of Nursing and Midwifery will run for 9 weeks. The Access Course will be a blend of online and face-to-face mop-up teaching and learning starting from June  to July (i.e. 5weeks Online) and face-to-face starting from August 1 to August 22 at Worawora Learning Centre.

The Deadline for submission of online Applications is May  for Access applicants.

SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH (SPH) – WORAWORA

The Access Course in the SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH is a five (5) week programme   to enable interested applicants with the requisite entry requirements to enroll onto degree programme (Sandwich) in the School of Public Health, after passing the Access Course examinations. 

Entry Requirements

GHANAIAN APPLICANTS

  • A holder of a certificate from Ministry of Health and Ghana Health Service training schools, Ministry of Local Government institutions and other accredited health training schools who have practised for three years or more may apply. These shall include: Community Health Nurses, Auxiliary Nurses and Midwives, Health Assistants (Clinical) certificate holders working as Environmental Health Officers, certificate or diploma holders working as Environmental Health Assistants, Nutrition Officers, Disease Control Officers and Health Information Officers as well as Officers in closely related fields such as Statistics, Sociology and Demography.
  • A holder of a diploma in any Health Care discipline or Environmental Health discipline with a FGPA below 2.50 and has served in a Health Care position or an Environmental Health position for three years or more may apply.
  • Applicants should upload a scanned copy of their Certificates, Professional Identification Number (PIN) or Auxiliary Identification Number (AIN), and their Academic Transcripts.

Successful Candidates will be enrolled at Level 200 of the SANDWICH programme in the Bachelor of Public Health (BPH) with the following options:

  • Disease Control
  • Health Information
  • Health Promotion
  • Nutrition
  • Mental Health
  • Environmental Health

The Access Course will be a blend of online and face-to-face mop-up teaching from May 16 to June 10.

Face-to-face mop-up and Examination at UHAS Worawora Learning Centre from June 11 to June 20

The Deadline for submission of online Applications is April  for Access applicants.

UHAS Access Course For Enrolled Nurses Admission Process

(1) Purchase an UHAS E-Voucher (GH¢220.00)

 (2) Start Application

Applications are received from both Ghanaian and Foreign applicants. Foreign applicants are however advised to contact the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) for a detailed interpretation of their results.

 Domestic Applicants

  • In completing the online form, applicants will be required to upload their passport size photograph (not more than 400KB) with a white background.
  • Upon completing the APPLICATION PROCESS, print three (3) copies of the PREVIEW PAGE (i.e. application summary), then submit online.
  • Applicants are advised to check thoroughly all details entered before they finally submit their online applications. A form, once submitted cannot be edited.
  • Upon printing the application summary; Access, Sandwich or equivalent applicants should attach 2 copies of each result slip; Access Course / Sandwich / MPhil /MPH / PHD applicants should attach their transcripts and certificates.
  • Applicants should purchase UHAS EMS envelopes (one big size envelope and one quarto size self-address envelope) from the nearest Ghana Post office.
  • The application documents and the result slips in addition to the quarto size self-addressed envelope should be put in the big UHAS EMS envelope and be submitted at the nearest Ghana Post office.

SPECIFICATIONS FOR ADMISSION PICTURE

a. The intended admission Picture must be taken on a white background with both ears showing and without shadow at the background.

b. For religious purpose, scarfs are allowed but both ears must be exposed in the picture.

c. Wearing of glasses / shades are not allowed, except for medical purpose, clear glasses revealing the eyes are permitted.

d. The Picture should have a dimensions of 300 x 360 pixels (1 x 1.2inches), resolution of 300, JPEG file format and a size not more than 400 kilobytes.
