UMaT Faculty of Mineral Resources Technology

UMaT Faculty of Mineral Resources Technology

The Faculty of Mineral Resources Technology was established in October 2001 when the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) School of Mines, Tarkwa was elevated to the status of a University College to train high-level personnel in Mining and allied engineering disciplines.
The Departments under the Faculty have, however, been in existence since 1982 when the University Council of KNUST approved a recommendation to restructure the then Institute of Mining and Mineral Engineering into a Faculty of KNUST.
The faculty consists of six (6) Academic Departments which offer the four-year BSc programmes in:

  1. Geomatic Engineering
  2. Geological Engineering
  3. Mining Engineering
  4. Mineral Engineering and
  5. Petroleum Engineering
  6. Environmental and Safety Engineering

Except for Petroleum Engineering and Environmental and Safety Engineering the other departments offer postgraduate programmes.
There are currently 821 undergraduate and 165 postgraduate students studying various programmes in the Faculty. The Faculty is the only such one in the West African sub-region for training high-level personnel in the minerals industry and continues to attract students from countries in the sub-region. International students come from Nigeria, Cote D’Ivoire, Gabon, Sierra Leone, Equatorial Guinea and Congo Brazaville etc.
The number of academic staff in the Faculty is 42 and these are highly qualified; with vast industrial experience. They are therefore able to wedge theoretical knowledge with professional practice when presenting their lectures. No wonder, our products easily get employment, are among the finest and are in high demand. A large number of our alumini are working in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Cote D’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, DR Congo, Tanzania, South Africa etc.
All the Departments have excellent laboratories where a wide range of investigations are conducted for students training, research and consultancy services.
