The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) Tarkwa, was established with the belief that technology can change the world. The University Llibrary is strategically positioned to help accomplish this conviction through its holdings and virtual resources. There are qualified staff to serve and support teaching, learning and research.
History
The University Library’s history is tied to the history of the University. It started as the Tarkwa Technical Institute Library in 1952. In 1961, it became Tarkwa School of Mines Library. The School was affiliated to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) as a faculty of the University in 1976. In 2001, it became the Western University College Library of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. It became the main library of the University of Mines and Technology in November, 2004. With a seating capacity of about 400 in the two-storied triangular building, the University Library complex was commissioned by John A. Kufuor, President of the Republic of Ghana (2001-2008) on 18th August, 2005 to serve the needs of the University, and the community in the mining, technology and allied fields.

Facilities

Information Desk
Main Lending Collection
The Library’s main lending collection holds the greater part of the Library’s stock. The collection is classified and shelved according to the LC classification system. This is made up of short and long term loans. On the first floor are books relating to  science and technology, business, and the humanities. Most of the books here may be borrowed for two weeks.
Discussion & Study Areas
The 120 seating facility is the Discussion Room on the first floor is used by students for group work and discussion. Noise should be kept at a minimum for the sake of other users. Apart from the Discussion Area, all other areas in the Library are for quiet studying.
Reference & Reserve Collection
The reference materials (e.g. dictionaries, encyclopaedias, handbooks, etc.) can be found in this section.
It also has a collection of reserved books, theses and past questions. These are heavily used books, recommended titles and journals which cannot be borrowed; they are for reference.
Theses and past questions can be consulted through staff on duty. You may use the lists to select and request the materials you need. Electronic versions of past questions are also available. All materials in this section are to be used in the Library.
All users must have their ID cards; and in some cases, letters of introduction would be demanded before using this facility.
Computer Centre
Our Computer Centre has a modest number of computers with internet connectivity. There are also limited spaces available for laptops. Users may use general software that have been installed for different purposes. Rules governing the use of computers and the facility must be adhered to.
Internet Facility
Internet connectivity (wireless and wired) in almost every part of the Library.

Policies

Though we aim to provide a safe environment within the Library, we encourage you to look after your personal property at all times and not to leave your valuable possesions unattended. Please use the pigeon holes provided for storage of bags.
The Library is not liable for the damage or the loss of items left in the bags deposited at the Baggage Section. Registration with the University and by extension, the Library is required to use the facilities with the University’s authorised identification (ID) card.
General Regulations
We ask you to respect our facilities and other users by:

  1. Placing all rubbish in the bins provided.
  2. Not reserving study places.
  3. Not disturbing others through the use of mobile telephones, use of audio option on mobile devices, or loud conversation.
  4. Not eating or drinking in the Library.
  5. Vacating the Library promptly at closing time. Advance warning of closure is always given by ringing a bell.

Loan and Care of Books & Other Resources

  1. Readers are responsible for any damage to or loss of a book in their charge. They will be required to pay the appropriate cost of damaged or lost books.
  2. Users must not deface any book belonging to the Library. Fines will apply if users are identified for defacing or mutilating  books and other materials belonging to the Library.
  3.  You are asked to treat all print and non-print materials with due respect and care.
  4. We ask you to observe copyright regulations for both printed and electronic information.
