University Of Mines And Technology (UMaT ) Online Learning Platform

The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) Tarkwa, was established with the belief that technology can change the world. The University Llibrary is strategically positioned to help accomplish this conviction through its holdings and virtual resources. There are qualified staff to serve and support teaching, learning and research.

History

The University Library’s history is tied to the history of the University. It started as the Tarkwa Technical Institute Library in 1952. In 1961, it became Tarkwa School of Mines Library. The School was affiliated to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) as a faculty of the University in 1976. In 2001, it became the Western University College Library of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. It became the main library of the University of Mines and Technology in November, 2004. With a seating capacity of about 400 in the two-storied triangular building, the University Library complex was commissioned by John A. Kufuor, President of the Republic of Ghana (2001-2008) on 18th August, 2005 to serve the needs of the University, and the community in the mining, technology and allied fields.

E-Resources

The University Library provides access to many resources in electronic format which complement the Library’s print collection and support research into the core programmes offered at the University and a wide range of other subjects in the Arts and Humanities. Although most of these resources have been paid for by the University through the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Ghana(CARLIGH), some may have some restrictions for their use. These resources can only be accessed on-site. Other journals are freely available on the Internet. Please read the Terms of License/Use for any e-journals you use.

Annual Reviews – These publications operate as a high quality filter, prioritizing and synthesizing the primary research literature in 37 different disciplines for the Biomedical, Life, Physical and Social Sciences.

BioOne – Provides access to critical, peer-reviewed research in the biological, ecological, and environmental sciences.

Cambridge University Press Online Journals – All subjects.

Cochrane Library – An internationally acclaimed database of regularly updated evidence-based medical systematic reviews.

Credo Reference – Provides over 3.5 million full text articles in about 4,000 reference books.

Directory of Open Access Journals  (DOAJ) – This service covers free, full-text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals. It covers all subjects and languages and provides full-text access to over 450 journals.

EBSCO – Academic Search Complete – Designed specifically for academic institutions, with more than 5,300 full-text periodicals, including 4,400 peer-reviewed journals. Covers 10,900 publications including monographs, reports, conference proceedings, etc.

EBSCO – Business Source Complete – Definitive scholarly business database, providing the leading collection of bibliographic and full text content for more than 1,200 journals.

EBSCO – MasterFILE Premier – Provides full-text for nearly 1,750 general reference publications, including biographies and images.

EBSCO – Newspaper Source – Provides selected full-text for 35 US and international newspapers.

Edinburgh University Press – African countries initiative, for Africa and African Journal of International & Comparative Law.

Emerald – Emerald is a leading English language publisher of academic and professional literature in management, library services and engineering. Emerald Management Xtra gives access to more than 75,000 full-text articles, 200,000 reviews from the world’s leading management journals, plus case studies, literature reviews, book reviews, conference information, interviews, and profiles.

Encyclopedia Britannica Online – Provides access to the reputable online version of this reputable encyclopedia. One of the best places to start for general information and/or an overview of a subject. No password required from on campus computers.

The Geological Society – represents one of the largest integrated collections of online earth science literature available. Bringing together key journals, special sublications and society book series on a single electronic platform, the Lyell Collection is a unique resource for researcher and student alike.

Institute of Electronic & Electrical Engineering – Provides web access to more than four-million full-text documents from some of the world’s most highly cited publications in electrical engineering, computer science and electronics. More than two-million documents are in robust, dynamic HTML format.

IMF eLibrary – Covers topics in the following area: Business and Economics, Education, Political Science, Technology and Engineering etc.

JSTOR– JSTOR coverage extends to all academic disciplines. What distinguishes JSTOR from other full-text databases is the depth of its coverage through time. Some journals in the collection date back to the 19th Century.

Palgrave Macmillan – Offers a combined portfolio of over 60 peer-reviewed e-journals in the Business, Social Sciences and the Humanities.

Policy Press Journals – Publishes journals in the field of public and social policy. A social science publisher committed to journals that will have an impact on research, learning, policy and practice at a international level.

Project Muse – Provides online access full-text journals in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Royal College of Physicians – Full-text access to Clinical Medicine.

Royal Society – UK’s national academy of science. Titles cover the Biological Sciences, and include Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society.
