Bachelor of Nursing Science (B Nurs) Requirements

• The admission requirements apply to students who apply for admission to the University of Pretoria with a National Senior Certificate (NSC) and Independent Examination Board (IEB) qualifications.

• School of Tomorrow (SOT), Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) and General Education Development Test (GED): The University of Pretoria no longer accepts qualifications awarded by these institutions.
• National Certificate (Vocational) (NCV) Level 4: The University of Pretoria may consider NCV candidates, provided they meet the exemption for bachelor’s status criteria and the programme requirements.

Postgraduate Degrees

Bachelor of Nursing Science (Education and Administration) [B Cur (I et A)]

Master of Nursing Science (M Cur)

Doctor Philosophiae (PhD)

Bachelor of Nursing Science [B Cur (I et A)] Requirement

1. Matriculation/Grade 12 certificate
2. Proof of registration at the SANC as General Nurse
3. For Child Nursing and Neonatal Nursing, registration as Midwife/Accoucheur is also required
4. At least one year experience in the workplace relevant to the area of specialisation is compulsory.
5. A post in the field of speciality at an accredited clinical facility with formal approval of studies by the particular clinical facility.

These programmes are only presented in Pretoria and require weekly attendance. Examinations take place during June and November each year

Master of Nursing Science (M Cur) Requirement

1. For the non-clinical master’s degree: another approved bachelor’s degree may also be considered
2. For the clinical master’s degree: a bachelor’s degree in Nursing Science
3. Matriculation or Grade 12 certificate with university exemption are required

Doctor Philosophiae (PhD) Requirements

A student will only be admitted to doctoral degree studies if he or she is in possession of a master’s degree. The PhD degree study is conferred by virtue of a thesis. A complete research proposal in respect of the proposed thesis must be submitted to the Department of Nursing Science before a student will be allowed to register. A student who has not already passed Nursing Research Methodology (VNM 800 or its equivalent from another institution) must register for, and attend Applied Research Methodology (TNM 800).
