MM002 M Sc Nursing (dissertation only)

Candidates who wish to pursue in-depth research study may enrol for the MSc Nursing by dissertation (MM002). This programme includes a semester course in Research Methods, compulsory for students who have not successfully completed an approved postgraduate level course or a course within the last 5 years. Evidence of such coursework must be submitted. The main component of this programme is a discrete research project and writing up of the dissertation.

MM017 M Sc Nursing (coursework and minor dissertation)

The coursework and dissertation programme (MM017) comprises course work (modules must total 90 credit weighting) and a minor dissertation (90 credits). Two compulsory modules: AHS5014F Research Methods and AHS5022S Theoretical Foundations of Nursing Practice must be taken. Elective modules may be taken from a range offered in the Faculties of Health Sciences or Humanities. Details of these will be made available on acceptance into the program.

UCT Division of Nursing & Midwifery’s Entry Requirements

MM002:

  1. A four-year Bachelors degree in Nursing
  2. Current registration with the SA Nursing Council [] as a Nurse/ Midwife.
  3. submit, with the application, a brief outline of approximately 500-1000 words indicating the purpose, design and scope of the proposed research project to be undertaken for the degree.

MM017:

  1. A four-year Bachelors degree in Nursing or a qualification recognised by the Senate as equivalent to the above (relevant postgraduate diploma).
  2. Current registration with the SA Nursing Council as a Nurse/ Midwife.

Alternative access to the coursework and dissertation programme:

A registered nurse and midwife not meeting the admission requirements as set out above may be considered for admission through recognition of prior learning.

A candidate shall be required to:

  1. Have a 3 or 4-year Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery and have at least a postgraduate diploma in nursing
  2. Have extensive, approved relevant experience
  3. Submit for evaluation a full portfolio of prior learning, a curriculum vitae and supporting letters of reference.

Computer literacy is a requirement. Computer literacy programmes are offered at UCT. These course fees are not included in the MSc programme fees. Students should have regular access to a computer and to email/internet if not on campus.
