Thabo Mbeki’s Biography Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki is a South African politician who served as the second president of post-apartheid South Africa, from June 16, 1999, to September 24, 2008.

A judge’s finding of improper interference in the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), including the prosecution of Jacob Zuma for corruption, led the National Executive Committee of the ANC to recall Mbeki on September 20, 2008, with about nine months remaining in his second term. Mbeki then announced his resignation. The Supreme Court of Appeal unanimously overturned Judge Nicholson’s decision on January 12, 2009, but the resignation stood.
